AOT Technologies and our partner, the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, recently gathered in Victoria, BC, to celebrate the successful completion of the Student Information Management System (SIMS) project, a major achievement in transforming how student financial assistance is delivered across British Columbia. This initiative helps them improve how student financial assistance is delivered throughout British Columbia.
What is SIMS?
The SIMS project was initiated to modernize and consolidate the aging back-end systems of StudentAid BC, which provides essential financial aid services to post-secondary students. The new system guarantees a streamlined process for applicants and staff with transparency, efficiency, and responsiveness to one of the province’s most important services.
Who does it help?
- Students now enjoy faster processing, mobile-friendly forms, and greater visibility into their applications.
- Post-secondary institutions can submit program data digitally, drastically reducing paperwork.
- Staff at the Ministry benefit from configurable workflows, real-time tracking, and scalable technology designed to accommodate changing federal and provincial policies.
Key Innovations and Results
Some of the highlights of the contributions made by AOT’s team were:
- Legacy systems were replaced by an efficient, automated, highly customizable modern implementation with a responsive UI and low maintenance.
- Annual updates are now seamless, with low-code configurations ensuring backward compatibility and reduced effort.
- Implementation of integrated tools enables proactive monitoring of the system and security alerts.
- Systems were built to meet WCAG Level A compliance at MVP, with a roadmap to Level AA.
- CI/CD pipelines are automated, testing is integrated, and proactive notifications guarantee seamless deployment and quality code.
- Supported full agile practices including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog refinement.
Celebrating the People Behind the Project
The SIMS team is a great example of what can happen when talented people work together with a clear goal, turning smart ideas into real impact.
A few weeks ago, the team met at Moxies to celebrate the successful project completion, a well-deserved time to look back on the collaboration, hard work, and dedication that made it happen.

Looking Ahead
As we reflect on the progress so far, the SIMS project demonstrates the strength of cross-functional teamwork and agile delivery. Plans include exploring AI-powered insights and expanding integrations to further enhance student experiences.
This project is not simply about system modernization—it’s about empowering students, facilitating institutions, and putting staff in a position to thrive. As we build on this momentum further, Andrew and Deepak will stay on with the project team, providing dedicated support over the next 6–12 months to help guide the next phases. As the project comes to a close, we celebrate not just the outcome but the people behind it—here’s to you!
